A few months ago, Author Bytes (who built and manages this website), asked me to switch over to WordPress as my new blogging platform. They found it to be more efficient and problem free than my prior unnamed platform. (Unnamed because I’ve already forgotten their name!) I was flattered that I was chosen to switch, because I was told that only really active bloggers were being asked to switch. Hooray, 2 to 3 times a month constitutes really active blogging.
So when Steven trained me on WordPress, he brought up categories. If you’re a blogger you already know how technically unsophisticated my blog is, but if you’re just a reader, friend, human or my mother, this should tip you off about how low-tech I am on this site. I had never noticed the categories bar on my own blog- or anyone else’s. I said, “No thanks Steven. I don’t have enough entries to bother categorizing them.”
My friend Wendy has a fantastic blog which hundreds, if not a thousand people read every day. So, of course, I immeidately noticed her clever and helpful categories. In fact, all of the blogs I’ve perused through book blogs ning have categories.
This morning, 8 months after starting my blog, I created a handful of categories. After placing about 6 past entries into categories, I was exhausted. And what if my categories aren’t the right ones, aren’t at all enticing and useful? Maybe I should just finish my coffee.
I won’t give up because developing the categories (history of writing, business of writing, inspiration, etc) reminded me of entry ideas I never wrote, and whole areas that I think I’ve neglected to explore. And there’s another reason I’ll continue to play with categories- and blogging. I wish people were commenting on my blog. I made this wish as I fell asleep last night, and this morning, a new friend (Hi Sabrina!) commented on my blog!
I’ve often seen on blogs the delighful comment, “I’ve been reading for awhile now, but never commented before….” I’m thinking perhaps I need to make an invitation- or beg- I’d love to hear from you! Let me know if there’s a category you’d like to hear more about- a question- a void- a grave error on my part. And thanks for reading!
